WHAT IS BUREL

BUREL IS A TYPICAL ARTISINAL COARSE FABRIC OF THE SERRA DA ESTRELA MOUNTAIN RANGE, ALTHOUGH NOT EXCLUSIVE TO THIS AREA.

MADE OF 100% NATURAL WOOL, BUREL HAS BEEN MAKING HISTORY THROUGH THE COVERS, PIECE OF CLOTHINGSUITABLE TO THE TASKS OF SERRA DA ESTRELA SHEPHERS, HELPING THEM TO WITHSTAND LOW TEMPERATURES. THIS IS THE PART THAT MOST SYMBOLIZES BUREL.

HOWEVER, DUE TO THE COST OF THE RAW MATERIAL. IT BEGAN TO LOSE MARKET SHARE WHEN FACING SYNTHETIC MATERIALS FABRICS THAT WERE LIGHTER AND WITH HIGHLY COMPETITIVE PRICES. THIS IS WHY IT STARTED TO BE LESS USED AND FORGOTTEN FOR A TIME, TO REAPPEAR LATER WITH ALL ITS EXUBERANCE IN THE FASHION, ARCHITECTURE AND CRAFTS FIELD. IT IS IN FACT POSSIBLE TO DEVELOP DIFFERENT KIND OF SOPHISTICATED, UNIQUE AND EXCLUSIVE PRODUCTS.

                     MANUFACTURE OF WOOL ( BUREL)

THE WOOL IS EXTRACTED FROM BORDALEIRAS SHEEP, BY CLIPPING, WHICH IS PERFORMED DURING THE MONTHSOF MAY A JUNE. AFTER SHEARING, THE WOOL IS THOROUGHLY WASHED WITH HOT WATER AND PUT TO DRY, BEING CARDED THEN CONTINUING TO THE WIRING PHASE, ARTISANAL OPERATION WITH THE AID OF THE SPINDLE AND SPINNING WHEEL TO MAKE IT INTO A WIRE. IT'S POSSIBLE TO MIX DIFFERENT COLORS. WEAVING THE WOOL WITH BLACK OR BROWN IS A COMMON PROCESS THAT GIVES ANOTHER COLOR TO THE FABRIC. TO CREATE OTHER COLORS THAN NATURAL, (RAW, SORRUBECO AND BROWN), THERE IS ALSO THE DYEING PROCESS TO GET READY.

NEXT STEP

THE WOOL IS SUBMITTED TO WOVEN, AND OTHER MECHANICAL PROCESSES, LIKE PUNCH DOWN THAT ENABLES A VERY CONSISTENT STRENGTH AND DURABILITY TO THE FABRIC.

THE PUNCH DOWN IS EXECUTED IN THE FULLING MILL (HEAVY CRAFT MILL, POWERED BY WATER, SIMILAR TO THE MILL), WHERE THE FABRIC IS BEATEN IN HOT WATER FOR A TIME, BY TWO HUGE HAMMERS, OR HEAVY WOODEN MALLETS. THUS IT BECOMES A HOMOGENEOUS, THICK PASTE AND STRONG, AND IS GIVEN THE NAME OF WOOLEN CLOTH.

THEREFORE, IT'S POSSIBLE TO HAVE DIFFERENT THICKNESSES OF THE SAME MATERIAL.
